From 2016 to 2026, the Branch experienced considerable transformation, commemorating its 50th and 60th anniversaries while navigating the challenges posed by the pandemic. During this period, it maintained its established classes and events, with a particular emphasis on recruitment and retention through enhanced social media outreach and inclusive programming.
The onset of the pandemic in 2020 necessitated the suspension of in-person gatherings, leading to an adaptation toward virtual meetings, online social activities, and initiatives such as the "Staying-In-Touch" video series. Dancing activities resumed in 2022 under stringent safety protocols and a streamlined schedule. Membership levels subsequently rebounded, and special events were held to celebrate the centenary of the RSCDS.
Teachers played a crucial role in sustaining the Branch’s activities and programs. The class structure evolved from four levels to three (Level 1, 2, and 3) to better meet member needs and accommodate fewer instructors. Post-pandemic, hybrid and flexible classes were adopted, including combined level classes. New programs like pre-class sessions and mini workshops were introduced to enhance skills. Weekend workshops were organized, featuring guest teachers and musicians, including a notable 2018 workshop and the CAMMAC Scottish Country Dance Retreats in 2024 and 2025. Summer dancing resumed post-pandemic, with formal Branch involvement and senior instructors mentored new teachers and supported professional development and certification achievements.
The Branch took part in various community events over the decade, including a theatre collaboration, a Senator’s hockey game flash mob dance, performances at the Montreal Black Watch Tattoo, Tartan Day on Parliament Hill, and demonstrations at retirement homes. After a pandemic pause, in-person outreach resumed with involvement in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, RSCDS centenary activities, the Ottawa Celtic Showcase, Great Canadian Kilt Skate, and the Newcastle Dance Festival.
Finally, to recognize outstanding service, the Branch established the Ottawa Branch Award in 2017. Recipients include long-serving members honored for their exceptional dedication and devotion to the Branch. Details of the recipients of this award are available on the Branch website.
